Drive-the-Right Campaign Urges Drivers to Move Out of the Passing Lane
As we approach another Holiday weekend, and traffic congestion increases on our highways, a public awareness and educational campaign called Drive-the-Right is raising money through GoFundMe in an attempt to get drivers to move over.
CHICAGO, June 29, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Spend a few hours behind the wheel on our nation's highways and you'll surely experience it. A line of big rig trucks is cruising along in the right lane, while some clueless individual in an automobile is in the left lane (the passing lane), traveling at the same speed as the trucks. In just a few minutes, a long line of cars is backing up behind the clueless "Left-laner" likely unaware that he or she should move over to the right and out of the passing lane. As patience begins to wear thin, drivers stuck behind the Left-Laner begin to look for an opening to accelerate and zig zag through traffic in an attempt to get around the slower driver.
"It happens all the time, and is so dangerous!" exclaims Drive-the-Right creator, Jhan Dolphin. "I've driven across almost every state in the country, and drivers cruising along in the left lane cause more road rage and crazy maneuvers than anything I've seen."
Even though it's rare to hear from anyone who has ever received a ticket for the violation, most states now have Lane Courtesy laws, designating the far-left lane as a "passing only" lane, making it illegal to travel in the left lane other than to pass another vehicle. Driving in the left lane for anything other than passing is not only illegal in a growing number of states, its unsafe and results in thousands of accidents annually, according to a study by the Traffic Operations & Safety Laboratory within the engineering department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Money raised for the Drive-the-Right campaign will fund highway billboards, a press tour to news outlets across the country, educational materials for driver's education professionals, and appearances at live events to bring attention to the problem. "I honestly feel that most of the left-laners that I've encountered sincerely have no idea they are doing anything wrong. For some reason, most don't even realize it is against the law or so incredibly dangerous. It doesn't matter if you drive a bit drive slower or faster than most… if a faster vehicle is behind you, get in the right lane and let them pass."
Dolphin believes that if people would pay more attention to the lane courtesy laws, driving would be more enjoyable, our roads would be safer, congestion would be reduced, and we might even save some money on fuel. The Drive-the-Right campaign is being funded through the GoFundMe crowd-funding site. For additional information, or to be part of the solution, visit:
