Dr. James Magner details hardships and heroism of American life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
WOODBRIDGE, Conn., July 31, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Sharing harrowing stories of grit and perseverance, Dr. James Magner's historical saga transports readers back to a tumultuous time in the Midwest. A pragmatic German farmer, his clever wife, and their children escape political repression in Europe, but must learn about slavery, new currencies, American politics, and steamboats in this fact-based historical novel intended to educate and entertain.
"Curious Exploits," set between 1846 and 1940, is a carefully researched nineteenth century American adventure story that follows three generations of a German immigrant family who overcame challenges as the nation faced epidemics, economic turmoil, the Mexican American War, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, and rapidly advancing technology.
"I was born and raised in Quincy, Ill., a town on the Mississippi River not far from Mark Twain's boyhood home, and I lived on the campus of the University of Chicago for four years while attending medical school. So I can write with authority about those settings," Magner said.
The book recounts little-known anecdotes about Abraham Lincoln, and honors scores of persons who actually lived in Quincy and Chicago. Fascinating details about effects of the massive geomagnetic storm that struck the Earth in 1859, and the tale of how the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River was intentionally destroyed by a steamboat add spice to the narrative.
"This adventure story was designed to be fun to read and is satisfying since the main characters succeed by perseverance and intelligence," Magner said.
