Gilbane Building Company Celebrates Ribbon Cutting of East Providence School
New, state-of-the-art facility the largest high school in Rhode Island
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I., Oct. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Officials from the East Providence School District, the State of Rhode Island, and the City of East Providence joined representatives from the Peregrine group, Ai3 Architects, and Gilbane Building Company to celebrate the official ribbon cutting of the 304,000-SF East Providence High School in East Providence, Rhode Island.
Built adjacent to the old high school, which is currently undergoing demolition to make way for new athletic fields, the new high school features four floors, 45 classrooms, two greenhouses, 10 modern science labs, interactive learning centers, and high-tech security measures to bolster 21st century learning.
During his ceremonial remarks, Rhode Island General Treasurer Seth Magaziner noted, "Every student deserves facilities that are warm, safe and dry and that prepare them for a future of success. As a former public-school teacher, I know firsthand the deep and lasting impacts facilities can have on a student's ability to learn. I am pleased that the statewide school construction plan we enacted has delivered millions of dollars to the East Providence High School project and dozens of other projects across the state, and I congratulate the City of East Providence, and Superintendent Crowley, on being a leader in putting these resources to work."
Superintendent Kathryn Crowley commended the efforts of the Gilbane project team, noting, "Gilbane has been a wonderful company to work with. They are local to Rhode Island, but their expertise spans the country. They worked with us early on, helping [devise a construction plan in line] with our educational philosophy."
The new high school is a welcomed addition to the community, as the old facility had grown past the point of repair in many aspects. The district has already begun to see increases in student enrollment, as young families move into the community in the hopes of offering their children the opportunity for future success in a state-of-the-art learning environment.
Speaking on behalf of the Gilbane team, Steve Duvel, senior vice president and New England division leader, thanked the City for entrusting Gilbane to deliver the new facility, and commenting on how the construction of the school engaged the growing community. "In delivering this project, we have used the latest advances in construction, sustainability, and safety technologies to create a safe, efficient, and state of the art jobsite," he said. "Throughout, we engaged the community and embraced diversity and inclusion, achieving 15.8% minority and women-owned business enterprises and 19% local apprentice utilization."
The new East Providence High School accommodates over 1,600 students and provides culinary services for the entire district.
