NEW YORK, April 29, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Global Thermostat announced today it signed an agreement with HIF to supply its direct air capture equipment to HIF's synthetic fuels (synthetic gasoline) pilot plant in Magallanes, Chile. The unit could remove up to a maximum of 250 kg of carbon dioxide per hour from the atmosphere.
In December 2020, HIF announced the financial support from the German Government for its Haru Oni pilot plant with the participation of Porsche, Siemens Energy, Enel Green Power, ENAP, and ExxonMobil.
Global Thermostat continues to work toward building associations and business partnerships which will allow for the scale-up of their revolutionary technology and make it commercially viable as a cost-effective carbon reduction solution.
"Together with HIF and our other business partners, we are accelerating toward the transformation of the world's economy so that it is powered by clean energy, providing commercial uses for carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere, and creating millions of green-economy jobs," said Dr. Graciela Chichilnisky, co-founder and CEO of Global Thermostat.
"We are very pleased that following months of negotiations we have reached an agreement to incorporate this leading direct air capture technology into our pilot plant. We view this as a first step towards the escalation of this solution to a commercial scale, which will be critical in the race to combat climate change. This is a key component of our plans are to produce the equivalent of Chile's national gasoline consumption in eFuels by 2030," said the president of HIF, Mr. César Norton.
The Haru Oni pilot plant will use wind power to produce hydrogen which will be combined with CO2 extracted from the atmosphere with Global Thermostat technology to produce methanol. The methanol will then be converted into gasoline. HIF intends to move forward with the construction of its first commercial scale facility in 2022. eFuels can be used as a direct substitute for fossil-based fuels, with no changes to existing logistics, infrastructure or engines required.
Global Thermostat's technology extracts carbon dioxide directly from the air where it is abundantly available, eliminating the need for expensive trucking or long pipelines.
