Higher Speed Limit Unlikely to Increase Accidents
Charlotte, North Carolina (PRWEB) July 11, 2013 -- North Carolina's legislature is considering a bill to raise the maximum speed limit on some roads to 75 mph according to WTVD-TV RALEIGH-DURHAM, NC (6.18.13). The bill has drawn some criticism and worries that higher speeds will mean more accidents, but car accident lawyer Herb Auger says that's unlikely.
Auger is among the Charlotte, NC personal injury attorneys who founded Auger and Auger, a law firm that works to help victims of car accidents get fair compensation for their injuries and losses. Auger frequently acts as an advocate for those injured on the road. He says that the speed limit increase is not unusual.
“There are over a dozen states that already allow 75 mph speed limits,” Auger said. “It will apply mainly to interstate freeways – this won't endanger neighborhoods or intersections.”
The bill has been approved by the state Senate and has made it through committee to an imminent vote in the House. The previous maximum speed limit was 70 mph.
“The difference between 15 and 20 mph is far more significant than the difference between 70 and 75,” Auger said. “In other states with higher speed limits, there is no evidence that the increase has led to more crashes.”
Instead, Auger says that the blame should be laid at the feet of reckless drivers.
“Once you have someone driving aggressively or talking on their cell phone, the freeway is unsafe even if the speed limit is 60,” he said. “Car accidents are typically caused by negligence, and the party who causes the accident is responsible for the costs on all sides.”
Auger added that anyone injured in a highway accident is entitled to compensation and should speak to a lawyer.
