TOKYO, Sept. 28, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Eurasia Group President Ian Bremmer delivered his annual "State of the World" speech today at the GZERO Summit where he presented his vision for where the world is headed in 2023, including the consequences of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the fracturing of the global economy, the future of US-China relations, what comes after the G-Zero, and more.
Video of Bremmer's speech is available at gzeromedia.com/stateoftheworld. The speech kicked off the annual GZERO Summit, a conference in Tokyo hosted by Eurasia Group, the world's leading geopolitical risk firm. Journalists wishing to interview Bremmer about his speech can email their requests to [email protected]. A text version of Bremmer's speech can be found here.
Bremmer's 'State of the World' speech touched on several key issues, including:
- Russia, where Bremmer says that Putin's decision to invade Ukraine is a catastrophe that has effectively decoupled Russia from the world's advanced democracies, and has united the West.
"Putin hoped to strengthen Russia, boost its prestige on the world stage, and replenish public confidence in his leadership. But it will soon become obvious, even to ordinary Russians, that Putin has accomplished exactly the opposite."
- US-China relations, where Bremmer says that although relations are indeed bad and getting worse, economic and political self-interest will prevent a total breakdown.
"Public expressions of hostility … play well with the domestic politics of both countries... The US-China decoupling in tech and security sectors will intensify in coming years, but the interdependence that binds their fates together is becoming more important, not less."
- The developing world, where Bremmer says that many of the gains from globalization have now been thrown into reverse, first by COVID and now by the Kremlin.
"Developing countries, especially vulnerable to the world's political and economic turmoil and a source of millions of migrants and refugees desperate to escape, will find over the next decade they don't have seats in the lifeboats."
- The coming world order(s), where he says there will be no G-1 or G-2 to replace the G-Zero.
"Tomorrow's geopolitics will be based not on a single global order, but on multiple coexisting orders, with different actors providing leadership to manage different kinds of challenges."
The GZERO Summit, which plays host to Bremmer's "State of the World" speech, brings key leaders from Japan and other nations, along with leaders from the private sector, to examine critical issues and opportunities within Asia and around the world. This year's Summit features several notable speakers, including Fumio Kishida, Japan's Prime Minister, Yuriko Koike, Tokyo's Governor, Yoshimasa Hayashi, Japan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Taro Kono, Japan's Minister for Digital Transformation.
