As the fall 2023 semester draws near, Intelligent.com surveys college-bound high school seniors and incoming college freshmen on their usage of AI for college essays
SEATTLE, July 31, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Intelligent.com, a trusted resource for online degree rankings and higher education planning, has published a recent survey report that assesses how many students are using ChatGPT to write their college application essays. The report also shares insight into whether these students perceive using ChatGPT as cheating. Overall, Intelligent.com researchers analyzed responses from 749 college-bound high school seniors and incoming college freshmen. Among this group, 41 percent say they used ChatGPT in the past six months and moved on to complete the entire survey.
Based on survey results, 10 percent of college applicants say they used or are likely to use ChatGPT to write their college application essays. Among the 41 percent of students who have used ChatGPT in the past six months, 14 percent of incoming college freshmen say they used ChatGPT to write their college essays. Of this group, 95 percent say the essays written by ChatGPT required "some" or "a lot" of editing, while 5 percent say "a little bit" of editing. Likewise, 34 percent of college-bound high school seniors who use ChatGPT say they are 'somewhat' or 'very' likely to use this AI tool to write their college essays.
Survey results also indicate that nearly 40 percent of student ChatGPT users say they used ChatGPT 'somewhat' or 'very' frequently to do their homework in the past academic year. Additionally, 72 percent of student ChatGPT users agree that using ChatGPT to write college application essays is cheating.
This survey was commissioned by Intelligent.com and conducted online by the survey platform Pollfish, via their partner Prodege, from July 15 to 21, 2023. In total, 749 students were surveyed. Forty-one percent, or 303 respondents, passed a screening question to ensure they had used ChatGPT in the past six months and went on to complete the full survey.
