The broadcasting rights of Pro Baseball League, Korea's most popular sports, hit the largest scale in the history of Korean professional sports.
On 25th Korea Baseball Organization(KBO) announced that telecommunication/portal consortiums (Naver, Kakao, KT, LG UPlus, SK Broadband) were selected as preferred bidders in the bidding for fixed mobile broadcasting rights of KBO league.
Telecommunication/portal consortiums' bidding price is ₩110 billion(annual average of ₩22 billion) for a total of five years. This is the largest amount of bidding for fixed mobile broadcasting rights in the history of professional sports in Korea. If the contract is signed, it will be a mega contract surpassing the previous ₩46.5 billion (annual average of ₩9.3 billion) contract of 2014~2018(5yrs), with an average annual increase of ₩12.7 billion.
Starting with ₩19 billion in 2019, the bidding amount will increase to ₩20 billion in 2020, ₩23.6 billion in 2021, ₩23.7 billion in 2022, and ₩23.7 billion in 2023. Once the contract is signed, telecommunication s/portal consortiums will be granted the exclusive rights to KBO league's fixed mobile broadcasting and of resale to 3rd parties.
On 25th KBO conducted a bidding evaluation for selecting business partners for fixed mobile broadcasting rights of KBO league at their conference room in Dogok-dong, Seoul. With the board members of KBOP, KBO's marketing subsidiary, participating as evaluation committees, telecommunication/portal consortiums received the highest score (96 points). The broadcasting consortiums including 3 network broadcasting companies, previous broadcasting right holders, has fallen behind.
This time the bid was conducted as open competitive bidding, breaking away from the practice of conducting optional contract. In order to assure fair and objective supplier selection, KBO arranged multilateral evaluation methods and standards. The evaluation committee included KBOP directors from 7 baseball teams, excluding the 3 teams affiliated with the telecommunication s/portal consortiums under evaluation.
