On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at 5:30 PM EST, the League of Minority Voters will officially celebrate this national launch by hosting a virtual voter education summit titled "A Critical Conversation: Voting in the 2020 Election and Elevating Diverse Voices."
WASHINGTON, Oct. 14, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Today, a nonpartisan group of community advocates, grassroots organizers, government officials, and business leaders announced the expansion of the League of Minority Voters, the country's first organization fully dedicated to further advancing minority voters' rights and opportunities by inspiring, educating, and empowering communities of color.
Originally founded in Portland, Oregon in 2007, and currently operating with chapters in Oregon, Washington, Maryland, North Carolina, and Nevada, the League is building on its success and taking its mission of empowering minority voters to the national electorate by establishing a national board of directors with roots in Washington, DC – the nation's capital.
"Every election is an essential exercise in democracy, but there's no question that the current geopolitical, socioeconomic, and health environment make the stakes for the 2020 election higher than ever," said Promise King, President and Founder. "The League of Minority Voters includes founding board members from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, career experiences, and political viewpoints, but we are united in one accord – to fight for minority voters' rights, to increase their political representation, and to promote fair and equitable policy development, while ensuring that all Americans recognize the power of their voice in the democratic process."

"The U.S. has one of the lowest voter turnouts in the world and among industrialized nations - just 56%* in 2016, for example," said Cristina Antelo, Chair. "The League of Minority Voters believes full representation is critical to ensuring that policies reflect the needs of all people. We are governed best when our government reflects the richness and diversity of our communities."
"We recognize that many obstacles restrict access to the ballot box, including voter suppression efforts, an inability to access clear and trustworthy voting information, confusion around the various voting options and – especially this year – health concerns related to COVID-19," said JP Bombardier, Co-Chair. "We aim to dispel the myth that voting doesn't matter and demonstrate the power of minority voters in advancing the democratic electoral process."
The League of Minority Voters aims to become a leading national platform for dialogue between minority voters and their elected officials by illuminating and amplifying diverse voices and becoming a trusted partner of grassroots voting and civil rights organizations.
