Maryland Winery Continues Their Journey Towards Environmental Stewardship
MOUNT AIRY, Md., Jan. 17, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On March 15, 2022 Linganore Winecellars turned on their 256KVA solar array to power winery facilities and the rest of our farm buildings for the first time. This solar installation consists of 748 panels, both roof mounted and ground mounted. It was a great opportunity to show what could be done on a larger scale for clean power generation. Linganore Winecellars has now hit the milestone of 1000 Mega Watts, or 1 GWh, of power generation which is equivalent to 1 Million Kilowatts of power! That amount of power is enough to drive the average electric car 3.65 Million miles or produce 7.6 Million gallons of hot water.
This culmination is the result of a lot of thought and research building on what could be accomplished back in 2012 with the installation of the winery's solar tracker connected to two EV car charging stations.
The trend of environmental stewardship is nothing new to Linganore Winecellars. Since the early 70's, the winery has worked to put their best thinking forward to advance agricultural health and sustainability. Their initiatives include recycling fruit pulp and consumer waste, adopting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to reduce and prevent pesticide usage, and maintaining healthy soils for future generations.
In the past decade, the winery has transitioned from using fossil fuel-powered equipment to using battery-powered alternatives, introducing electric forklifts and pallet movers. Their latest advancement includes three electric vineyard tractors, introduced in mid-2024, to further reduce their carbon footprint.
Anthony Aellen, President and Executive Winemaker, proudly reflects on the winery's achievements, saying "We were honored back in 2022 with the 'Maryland Green Business of the Year' award which we are still very proud to have received. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support of our growing family business. Our roots run deep and now cleaner than ever!"
Linganore Winecellars is excited to continue leading the way in sustainable winemaking, proving that with innovation and commitment, a greener future is possible.
