DAYTON, Ohio, Sept. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- LiquidPiston, an advanced internal combustion engine technology company, will be showcasing its 'X' engine, which can enable greater than 50 percent increases in flight endurance, at the biennial Turbine Engine Technology Symposium (TETS) kicking off today at the Dayton Convention Center. LiquidPiston's CEO, Dr. Alexander Shkolnik, will also be presenting during the Innovative Propulsion Concepts Workshop on Wednesday, September 12.
LiquidPiston was recently awarded additional funding from DARPA to continue development of its 30 kilowatt (40 horsepower) rotary Diesel X4 engine and is working with the army to deliver a 2 kilowatt hybrid electric power system for the M777 Howitzer. The X engine offers near zero vibration, low thermal and acoustic signature, achieves very high power density and specific power of up to 1 hp/lb while running on Diesel or JP-8 fuels. The company's engine technology includes an optimized thermodynamic cycle and a new type of rotary engine architecture.
By "inverting" the prior generation Wankel type rotary engine, the X- architecture corrects the major performance, sealing, and lubrication/durability weaknesses of the previous generation rotary engines. The result is up to ten times smaller and lighter than a piston Diesel engine with 30% reduced fuel consumption (50% over a gasoline engine).
LiquidPiston is developing a range of advanced internal combustion engine prototypes, initially focusing on small engines from 3HP - 40HP. Its multi-fuel 3-5HP 70cc X-Mini is a fit for Group 2 UAVs, while its larger 40HP 750cc X4 engine is a fit for Group 3 UAVs. The engine can also be scaled toward an APU application for aerospace applications. LiquidPiston engines provide power-to-weight and fuel efficiency advantages that enable improved payload capabilities and increased mission flight duration in prime propulsion and hybrid electric propulsion applications.
Larger scale versions of the X- engine can enable significant fuel efficiency and systems weight savings compared to small turbines by powering airborne Auxiliary and Supplemental Power Units for rotorcraft and fixed-wing aircraft. In addition, the X-engine can power hybrid-electric propulsion for the emerging VTOL autonomous and manned aircraft, delivering greater range, aircraft safety, and lower systems weight compared to electric-only aircraft.
