PHOENIX, Nov. 9, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 5.5 million U.S. veterans are living with a disability; many facing everyday challenges such as taking a shower safely in their own home. In honor of Veterans Day, Jacuzzi Bath Remodel of Arizona and Tundraland Home Improvements, is teaming up with 16 companies across 14 states for the fourth annual Baths for the Brave initiative.
The remodel, which will start and be completed in one day, is planned for Wednesday, Nov. 11 (Veterans Day) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event provides more than a dozen veterans from across the country, including local U.S. Air Force veteran Dennis Sheffield, with a free brand-new, easy access shower system. To date, Baths for the Brave has helped more than 60 veterans eliminate the everyday fight to bathe safely, and this year that number continues to grow. Brian Gottlieb, CEO of Tundraland Home Improvements founded Baths for the Brave, which was launched nationally in 2017. This is the second year the event has happened in Arizona. In its first three years, Baths for the Brave has provided more than $500,000 in remodels to veterans.
"It's our fourth annual Baths for the Brave and every time we are amazed by the gratitude and outpouring of support from other businesses across the country that also want to give back to veterans," said Gottlieb. "This year, we will have had the opportunity to provide new baths for more than 14 veterans."
Sheffield, a Vietnam War veteran, served 22 years in the Air Force and retired in 1988. He spent time at Davis–Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson as a mechanic after finishing tech school and eventually was stationed in Cameron Bay, Vietnam, where he spent just over a year on tour. Sheffield went on to Chu Lai, Vietnam with the Marines working on aircrafts. His service sent him to various places, including Bangkok, Thailand and Okinawa, Japan. After returning to the states, Sheffield was assigned once again at Davis-Monthan where he retired. He currently lives in Avondale.
After his retirement, Sheffield suffered a fall while working as an aviation mechanic that eventually lead to steel rods being placed in his back. He also has Parkinson's Disease, which throws off his balance and makes simple tasks like showers in his current bathtub difficult. Despite all of this, Sheffield remains grateful and humble upon the news he will be the recipient of a complete remodel.
"It's hard to express what this means," Sheffield said. "There are so many people other than me that need help. So many veterans that have lost limbs and things like that. Being selected brings tears to my eyes."
Baths for the Brave was created to provide local veterans and families in need with remodeled bathrooms, all free of charge. Gottlieb's long-term goal is to involve all 50 states.
"Giving back is a fundamental way of life for us at Tundraland," Gottlieb, said. "It's more than what we do; it's who we are. Our whole team is on board and passionate about it, so growing this program nationwide was something we are all very excited about. We're thankful our partnering home improvement companies have similar values. To see this program extend to its fourth year nationally and continue growing is incredible."
All participating home improvement companies, including Tundraland, will donate 100% of their time and materials to a veteran in need from their own local community. The remodels across the country will all take place simultaneously. Additional participating companies also include:
