ROSEMEAD, Calif., Sept. 27, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Maryvale today announced the opening of Seton House, their new temporary housing program specifically designed for mothers and their young children, who are facing homelessness.
Maryvale is Los Angeles County's longest-operating children's charity. Established in 1856 by the Daughters of Charity, Maryvale was created to address the needs of orphaned and abandoned children in Los Angeles and today provides a range of mental health and early childhood education services. With the addition of Seton House, Maryvale extends its mission of community-based assistance.
"The opening of Seton House not only represents a new chapter for Maryvale but more importantly, a safe and supportive home for young single mothers to focus on building a positive and healthy future for themselves and their children. We know the need is great and Seton House allows us to lift up one individual, one family, and one community at a time," said Steve Gunther, MSW, President & Chief Executive Officer.
Seton House was developed to provide safe, temporary housing for single mothers, with up to two children each under the age of 10, who are facing homelessness. Eligible families receive up to six months of services which include weekly group therapy sessions, weekly individual counseling, and assistance with developing the necessary life skills to achieve long-term employment and permanent housing.
Along with individual resident rooms, families have access to a computer room, kitchen, multipurpose room, outdoor play yard, TV room, and children's playroom. Seton House establishes a compassionate environment where mothers can focus on personal development while learning life skills to sustain a positive and productive lifestyle for themselves and their children.
The opening of Seton House is timely because it serves a growing population in need of such services and support. According to the Los Angeles Mission, "Up to 50% of the homeless population in Los Angeles are made up of women, and many of them are single moms." The community need is recognized by Maryvale and its generous partners, Health Net, Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation, The Rose Hills Foundation, and The Los Angeles Orphanage Guild; all of whose donations and support helped to bring Seton House into existence.
"Our temporary housing program at Seton House is such a necessary service for our community as we, unfortunately, continue to see the rise in unhoused families with very limited access to community support and resources. We are immensely excited to open our doors and welcome mothers and children into a space where they can feel safe, valued, and supported as they do the work to change the trajectory of their lives, and the lives of their children," stated Crystal Overstreet, Program Manager, Seton House.
Already Seton House has delivered benefits. One of Seton House's residents stated, "I am so excited to be a resident at Seton House, where I am able to have safe childcare for my son, while I work to find employment and finish my education."
