The world's largest annual online mathematics competition celebrates the love of math and connects students from across the globe
NEW YORK, March 2, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On March 8, 2023, hundreds of thousands of students from around the world will unite for a free, online annual event that fosters a love of math in students and boosts their engagement in the subject. 'World Math Day'—now in its 16th year— connects students from across the globe in a fun competition showcasing that every student is a math student.
"We are delighted to be celebrating our 16th year of the World Math Day global challenge," said Katy Pike, Mathletics Chief Product Officer at 3P Learning. "World Math Day has become a competition that students around the world look forward to each year."
World Math Day comes during a critical time for schools. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), math scores for grades four and eight showed the largest declines since NAEP testing began in 1990. Students lost about 35% of an average school year's learning. Teachers are now faced with the difficult task of catching their students up, leading to anxiety for teachers and students. Math anxiety can change students' approach to learning the subject in ways that can set them up for ongoing challenges in the subject. A study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology suggests math-anxious students choose less-effective study methods. Events like World Math Day offers schools a way to teach math that engages and excites students, which are critical components to overcoming profound disruptions in learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Math is not just about numbers, math skills are skills for life—developing reasoning, creativity, abstract and spatial thinking, problem-solving and communication skills," added Pike. "World Math Day provides a platform that encourages students to have fun with math in an engaging way."
Created by Mathletics, the world's leading online math program, World Math Day is free, all-inclusive and open to K–12 students. The 48-hour event gives students a chance to test their math skills and compete against others in up to 20 live 60-second math challenges with the goal of getting as many questions correct as possible. To date, more than 10 million students across 160 countries have participated and together, answered more than 1 billion math questions during World Math Day.
Throughout the event students will:
- Test their math skills in a live, timed format against other students from across the world
- Earn points for correct answers that go toward their World Math Day scores
- Compete as individuals or together as schools, earning a spot on the World Math Day Hall of Fame
In addition to the timed math challenges, there are activities designed for students to help build their math skills and confidence. Signing up for World Math Day is free, regardless if schools and districts currently use the Mathletics program or not, and registration is open now.
Students throughout the U.S. and Canada are encouraged to participate and join in on the fun. After the event, Mathletics will recognize the top schools and students, with each global winner in their age group receiving a personalized engraved trophy and iPad. Regional winners will also receive a personalized engraved trophy. Children are encouraged to spread the word in their schools!
