TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 21, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- After a national search, Tampa Preparatory School welcomes Matt Kerwick as their new varsity lacrosse coach. Most recently, Kerwick hails from IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL. The core of Kerwick's coaching experience, however, comes at the collegiate level.
Kerwick was the head lacrosse coach at Cornell University (2014-2017) where he led the team to NCAA tournament and Ivy League Championships in 2014 and 2015. While at Cornell he coached the 2014 Ivy League Player of the Year and the 2014 Rookie of the Year.
Prior to that, he was the head, associate head, or assistant head coach at six universities dating back to 1991, including associate head coach at Georgetown University (2011-2012), head coach at Jacksonville University (2008-2011) where he started and built the first Division I lacrosse program in the state of Florida and head coach at Hobart College (2001 - 2008).
Why Tampa Prep? Kerwick says, "I've had the good fortune of building good programs as a collegiate coach. To be able to build from the foundation here is a great opportunity to assist Tampa Prep in becoming the program it deserves to be."
Kerwick says that from the moment he stepped on Tampa Prep's campus, every single person he met--from the security guard, to the receptionist, to the athletic director and members of the administrative team--showed him it would be a great place to grow a tremendous program.
"It's clear that Tampa Prep wants to be one of the best teams in the state," he says. "I know it's going to take time, but we're excited to build a top program here in an incredible setting. I'm eager to get started and meet the student athletes who are going to build this program with me."
