Medical Bill 911 includes six instructional videos and the Medical Bill 911 Handbook, which provide a step by step guide to dealing with healthcare providers and insurance companies. Among other things, the program recommends that consumers never pay the "full amount due" on any medical bill when it first arrives. Instead, consumers want to verify that every bill is correct and remember that most medical bills are negotiable—just like buying a car. A first of its kind, this consumer self-advocacy resource has the potential to save consumers hundreds if not thousands of dollars on their medical expenses.

According to Trauco, medical bills are generally filled with confusing codes and special terms that lack clarity about whether consumers or insurance providers are responsible for payment. The Medical Bill 911 videos and detailed manual describe the way to understand the terminology and ease the burden of dealing with big medical bills. It provides industry insider knowledge and practical advice on how to communicate with healthcare billing offices by phone and U.S. mail and successfully negotiate medical bills.

"One of the biggest mistakes people make is ignoring a medical bill," adds Trauco, who has directly reviewed hundreds of thousands of medical bills and is known for finding solutions when other professionals say there is no way. "Unpaid medical debt typically leads to credit problems in the form of collection accounts and potential court judgements. This can be extremely damaging to individual's credit reports and may prevent them from obtaining a student loan, buying a car, or even buying a house in the future."

The financial pressure of consumer medical bills has been mounting for at least the past two decades. In 2005 and 2009 Senator Elizabeth Warren co-authored two papers claiming that more than 50 percent of all bankruptcy filings in the U.S. are caused by medical debt. A 2009 study published in The American Journal of Medicine revealed that more than 60% of bankruptcies are medical related. And yet another study led by Dr. David Himmelstein, a professor of public health at CUNY School of Public Health at Hunter College, found that more than 530,000 families each year are ruined by medical bills and illnesses and that most Americans are "just one serious illness away from bankruptcy."

Another area of healthcare that's been spiraling out of control is emergency medical transport costs. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), ground ambulance transport fees vary widely—from $224 to $2,204 per transport. The GAO also found that between 2010 and 2014 charges for helicopter air ambulance service doubled, from $15,000 to about $30,000 per transport. In the past, ambulance services were mostly operated by volunteers or a local fire department where now they are primarily run by private companies and venture capital firms. And these ambulance services and private insurance companies often do not agree on a fair price that consumers will be expected to pay.
