In 2005 and 2009 Senator Elizabeth Warren co-authored two papers claiming that more than 50 percent of all bankruptcy filings in the U.S. are caused by medical debt. A 2009 study published in The American Journal of Medicine revealed that more than 60% of bankruptcies are medical related.
