Born in Germany and raised in Arizona, Hank Robinson joined the armed forces at a young age and completed United States Army Infantry tours in war zones in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Returning home with severe trauma, Robinson found an outlet in artistic metalwork and ultimately graduated from the Combination Welding School at Arizona Automotive Institute. The father of three has since used his experiences to provide art therapy for veterans facing PTSD and other challenges. As a prolific engraving artist, Robinson is the first Official Monster Energy Engraver. In 2012, he founded Hanro Studios Engraving to create custom-made and personalized metal portrait art pieces for top-shelf clients, including musicians like The Dirty Heads Bone and Thugs N Harmony and elite artists in basketball, football, motorsports, and action sports. Hank Robinson was born in Germany to a U.S. Army father and grew up in Arizona. Following in his dad's footsteps, he joined the United States Army and completed three tours overseas in active warzones. "Two days after 9/11, I was at the recruiting station ready to go. Took my test about a week later, and two days after 9/11, I was in boot camp. That was my calling."
Robinson returned home with multiple awards for Valor in combat, but he also returned deeply scarred by trauma from combat. "I came back and went kind of crazy. That's when I tattooed my face all up. I moved to Mexico for a year and kind of forgot about life here for a while," said Robinson. In search of an outlet for combat-related stress, Hank turned to engraving in 2012 and founded Hanro Studios Engraving while living in Arizona. "I first thought I was going to go the tattoo way, but then I found metal, and that completely changed the game for me."
Cultivating a unique style influenced by heavy metal and action sports, Robinson wields his dremel to create extraordinary metal art on anything from custom-built vehicles to furniture and wall ornaments. "It's pretty much a tattoo on metal," said Robinson describing his style. Ultimately, Robinson was introduced to Monster Energy through Nick Ham, Founder of Warrior Built Foundation, a group of combat veterans who compete in Baja 500 and 1000 races.
Since 2018, he has applied his talents as the official Monster Energy Engraver. So far, Robinson's standout works include a fully engraved stock car hood for NASCAR legend Kurt Busch in 2019: "Kurt Busch donates so much in tickets for veterans. We ended up engraving that hood for him. That was so badass!" Additional highlights include engraved portraits of pro skateboarder Nyjah Huston, musician Machine Gun Kelly, and countless trophies for sports competitions.
When not traveling to art exhibits or working in the studio, Robinson raises money for various charities supporting veterans. These commitments include a PTSD Art therapy course with Wounded Warrior Project, providing veterans with an outlet for stress while transitioning from combat. "Finding other veterans and relating stories really helps. And you find your path in life and walk on it," said Robinson.
Today, Robinson's workshop, Hanro Studios Engraving, proves successful to the point of working by appointment only. Hanro's list of A-list clients includes West Coast Customs, rappers TechN9ne
And Layzie Bone, as well as pro athletes Jared Allen (Five-time Pro Bowl Defensive End), Martin Maldonado (Milwaukee Brewers), and Dennis James (IFBB Pro Bodybuilder); among others.
Looking at his current status in the art world, Robinson said on UNLEASHED: "I pretty much got to a point where people are, 'Just do your thing!' I'm pretty blessed that way,"
