Students awarded through annual scholarship programs and StartUp Frederick Competition
FREDERICK, Md., June 28, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Nymeo Federal Credit Union, a community-based credit union serving Frederick and Montgomery Counties, awarded $7000 in scholarships to students throughout the community. The scholarships were awarded through Nymeo's annual scholarship program, the Believe & Achieve College Scholarship, the Frederick County Public School's (FCPS) StartUp Frederick Competition, and through the CU Foundation Scholarship.
Two recent graduates from Governor Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, Diya Jha and Madison Warren, were this year's recipients of the Nymeo Believe and Achieve College Scholarship. A committee of judges selected the two winners based on their essays, academic accomplishments, participation in school, and community activities. The students both received a $1,500 scholarship.
"This was the first time since the inception of the scholarship program in 2015 that we've had two students from the same high school receive the award!" said Vicki Johnston, President, and CEO of Nymeo. "We received outstanding applicants from seniors from our membership and throughout Frederick and Montgomery County schools. Our judges had a challenging time reaching a decision on the winners."
Aside from the annual college scholarship, Nymeo again sponsored and participated as a judge for FCPS' StartUp Frederick. Held virtually, this competition similar to Shark Tank, gave students an opportunity to present inventions and ideas to a panel of judges. Winners were selected based on a rubric and awarded a monetary scholarship ranging from $900 to $50.
"As one of the judges for this competition, I was amazed at the students' ingenuity and creativity," said Kristina Morgan, Nymeo's Chief Operations Officer. "Our credit union is proud to continue sponsoring a competition that fosters the entrepreneurial spirit."
Additionally, Nymeo and the Credit Union Foundation of Maryland & DC presented Nymeo member, Samantha Mailhot, with a $1,000 college scholarship. Samantha is entering her second year at High Point University in North Carolina. College or trade school-bound members of any credit union based in Maryland or DC or affiliated with the MD|DC Credit Union Association are eligible to apply each year to this Credit Union College Scholarship.
