Marathon Swimmer Penny Lee Dean Releases New Autobiography
Fayetteville, N.Y. (PRWEB) April 02, 2014 -- The English Channel has been a popular site for testing swimming ability since the late 1800s, when Matthew Webb swam across it in 21 hours. In 1978, Penny Lee Dean, joined the ranks of record challengers. She swam the English Channel in just seven hours and 40 minutes, surpassing the previous record by an hour and five minutes – all while battling a birth defect. Dean tells her inspiring story in her new autobiography, “Just Try One More” (published by Balboa Press).
Dean begins her story by describing her family life when she was a baby. She was born without an anterior circumflex artery in her left arm. Her arm and hand would often become numb and turn blue, due to this congenital anomaly. While this could have held her back she instead let it empower her, and began swimming lessons at only 2 years old.
Readers watch as Dean’s love for swimming turns into a burning passion, driving her to challenge herself throughout the book, and ultimately leading to her record-breaking swim of the English Channel at age 23.
Dean hopes her book will not only entertain readers, but also that it will inspire athletes and readers to challenge themselves and reach their dreams.
An excerpt from “Just Try One More”:
“Oh, am I cold? How does it feel now? I guess it is cold. Yes, I am. All this occurred as soon as I was swimming again. Prior to being asked, I had not really even thought about being cold. Luckily, after kicking it around in my mind for a few minutes, I realized the cold did not bother me. I was so acclimatized and in control of my mind, I was able to turn such thoughts off. At that point, I realized how prepared mentally and physically I was for the swim. Nothing could bring me down, or so I thought.”
