DANBURY, Conn., Dec. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Preferred Utilities Manufacturing is introducing a new innovation in the management and maintenance of industrial boilers: an auto-calibration feature designed to improve performance and make service easier and safer. The new feature has been added to the company's JC-30D-EZ Smoke Opacity Monitoring System.
The JC-30D-EZ assures accurate measurement of smoke emissions from boilers, incinerators, kilns, and similar sources of intermittent, visible emissions, as well as an alarm contact that energizes when opacity exceeds a predetermined setpoint. That setpoint is usually required by code to be a 20 percent blockage.
Even though most modern oil burners produce relatively little smoke, some soot and dirt can build up over time on the light source. Reaching that 20 percent blockage threshold, therefore, is not uncommon. While there is virtually no danger at that level of blockage, the resulting alarm can cause unnecessary, nuisance shutdowns of the boilers. Before the auto-calibrate feature, operators were forced to climb ladders to get into the boiler and clean the light source and detector manually.
Auto-calibrate allows the monitoring system to sense the soot build-up and calibrate the light sensor and source to the new "normal." This does not decrease the sensitivity of the light detector.
Equipped with the updated automatic opacity calibration, the JC-30D-EZ can calibrate without needing an operator. The information it provides supports an increased emphasis on clean, efficient combustion and effective air pollution control.
Preferred Utilities recently implemented the JC-30D-EZ featuring auto-calibrate in an upgrade for the New York City Department of Education. It was part of a multi-pronged approach to modernizing and automating old, inefficient boiler rooms that had seen decades of use and abuse. Utilizing products like this helped the customer avoid a complete, expensive boiler overhaul.
