Kidwings Grant to Help Educate Idaho Students About Ecological Stewardship
Portland, OR (PRWEB) July 02, 2013 -- In an effort to support non-profit organizations seeking to educate youth about natural resources, Owl Brand Discover Kits, a retail company specializing in science education, has awarded a grant to Idaho based Snowden Wildlife Sanctuary through the Kidwings Finding Funding program. Kidwings is a web-based resource developed by the retailer.
Located in the mountains of central Idaho near the Lake Fork River, Snowden Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for animals in the wild in need of rescue due to injury or having been orphaned by their parents. The sanctuary has been rehabilitating animals and, if possible, releasing them back into the wild since 1989.
As part of their mission, Snowden Wildlife staff and their partners are committed to educating the public about wildlife and the essential role animals play in the overall health of our ecosystem. As part of the effort to educate and inform future stewards of our natural resources, Snowden Wildlife Sanctuary developed the “Wild About Wildlife! Traveling Trunk Program."
The Traveling Trunks are unique containers that have items consistent with a specific theme. Themes include animals native to central Idaho, such as black bears, owls, canids (wolves, coyotes) among others. Each Trunk is loaned, at no cost, to classes, camps, clubs, and other youth groups in McCall and surrounding communities.
As part of the Owl themed trunk, owl pellets supplied by Owl Brand Discovery Kits are included in order to provide kids with a hands-on experience while learning about the hunting habits of owls in the wild and why they are essential to ecological balance.
Carolyn Walpole of Snowden Wildlife Sanctuary states the organization is “THRILLED to receive this grant from you. With this grant I will be able to greatly extend our "reach" beyond special requests with the traveling trunk. I will be incorporating the owl pellet dissection in several different ways with our Traveling Owl Trunk so that every child exposed to the trunk materials will have the opportunity to dissect a pellet using the OBDK Guide.”
Tina Ferguson, OBDK's Outreach Coordinator adds, "Upholding people and organizations that are committed to a greater understanding of wild predators and their important role is essential to our stewardship goals. Our customers expect and enjoy this aspect of our business. Going forward, they will be participating in our decisions to bless others. We are actively recruiting other businesses to partner with us to give back even more!"
