Set at a fictional hospital in Montreal, Spare Parts is a fresh look at classic medical horror thrillers. The setting and action take on additional realism from the author's experiences living in Montreal, serving in the military and working in a hospital.
MONTREAL, April 6, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Local Montrealer, Canadian army veteran and hospital worker Aaron Deck has written and self-published a horror novel, Spare Parts, during the pandemic. Aaron is 2-0 against the four horsemen of the apocalypse. After serving on the frontlines in the war in Afghanistan in 2006, he later served as a healthcare worker during the global pandemic, during which he completed and published a horror novel.
Spare Parts, released in both paperback and ebook on April 2nd, 2022, is Aaron's first full-length novel and the first part of a horror series. The story centres around Simon and Alessia, workers at a hospital plagued by corruption -- and perhaps something worse. Both are caught in a web, but neither knows who or what is preying on the hospital, or how they can avoid becoming the next victims. Set in Montreal at the fictional St. Agnes Hospital, the book is a clear homage to classic horror stories such as Frankenstein and The Shining.
"Deck's medical mystery is an engaging slow burn. [...]Although spooky hospitals and deranged doctors are a frequent subject in horror, Deck's take on the genre is nuanced enough that it will grab the attention of even the most seasoned horror fan." The BookLife Prize.
Aaron has a history of service, having been in the Canadian Reserve as a member of the Signals team for 5 years, including accepting a deployment to Afghanistan. After his return, he spent a lot of time bouncing around between service jobs, taking some courses, and playing in several bands, before he applied to work in housekeeping at a local Montreal hospital in 2011.
"I like to help people, even if it's in a support capacity," says Deck. "It's important to me to be of service to others in need. First I found that in the military, and then I found that in the medical industry. When it came to the novel, you know, they say write what you know. So I know hospitals and I know horror, it seemed like a good fit!" he laughs.
"Deck's talent lies in creating a creepy atmosphere. [...His] prose is taut and unflinching[, and] he manages to create enough intrigue and suspense to keep the reader's interest piqued." The BookLife Prize

About Spare Parts
Old, outdated, and falling apart, St. Agnes Hospital's management is looking to upgrade locations. But the upcoming move provides an opportunity for things to slip between the cracks, and someone, or something, is taking advantage of the chaos.
Simon is working as a porter at the hospital when an anonymous doctor approaches him with the opportunity to make more money. But as the requests weigh on his conscience and the payoffs stop balancing out the questions, he's left wondering what he's gotten himself into.
Alessia is a physiotherapist trying to build a life of her own in spite of her past mistakes and overbearing parents. As the move looms closer, she notices strange and concerning irregularities in the wards, putting a target on her back.
Both are caught in a web, but neither knows who or what is preying on the hospital -- or how they can avoid becoming the next victims.
