Teacher Created Materials Donates Nearly 2,700 Pounds of Food to Feed Hungry Children

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Dec. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Huntington Beach, CA: For the fourth year in a row, Teacher Created Materials has supported the work of Caterina's Club and local radio station KFI AM 640 by collecting pasta and pasta sauce in the annual pastathon. Every year, Caterina's Club runs the pastathon to gather food to support its efforts in feeding a nightly meal to nearly 4,000 children at 68 sites throughout LA and Orange Counties.
Teacher Created Materials is a leading educational publisher whose vision is to create a world where children love to learn. They know that this vision is not possible when children come to school hungry. Studies show that students who miss meals and experience hunger are more likely to struggle academically and behaviorally in school. They are also more likely to struggle with tardiness and truancy and even to repeat a grade.*
This year, departments across Teacher Created Materials competed to see who could bring in the most pasta and pasta sauce. The winning department received the Golden Apple Award—and, of course, bragging rights. "While winning the Golden Apple Award is fun," said one employee, "that's not the real reason we enjoy the pastathon. As a former elementary school teacher, I know how important it is for kids to have nutritious meals every day so that they can be prepared to learn. Knowing that we are helping to feed kids all over LA and Orange County is the true reward."
"We are so honored to work with an amazing staff that helps us create a world in which children love to learn every day," said Deanne Mendoza, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships. "To see their generosity during this time of year for such an important cause is remarkable."
The pastathon ended on December 7, with a live broadcast from the KFI radio team at Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. Teacher Created Materials donated 2,689 pounds of pasta and sauce at the event as well as an additional monetary donation. Local community members also supported in TCM's donations, with the largest donation coming from Garden Park Elementary School in Garden Grove, California. Students from Garden Park donated 479 pounds of pasta and sauce. And for the second year in a row, Operations and Inventory was named the winning department, donating a total of 742 pounds.
