WASHINGTON, Sept. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The House of Garcon, a diverse international network of LGBTQ activists and members of the House Ballroom community, recently participated in the historic 2020 National Action Network March on Washington where it made history as one of the largest openly black LGBTQ organizations in attendance.
The Garcon presence at the NAN March was the culmination of a week-long social justice initiative (organized by the senior leadership on the organization) that included panels, workshops, and training sessions that focused on the LGBT presence in the black lives matter movement.
On Saturday (8/22), the organization hosted a social justice training session with members Jonathan Lykes (a 2018 Roddenberry Foundation Fellow and Board Member for the Black Youth Project 100); Jason Walker (New York City based health and human rights activist) organized and facilitated by Dr. Frank Leon Roberts (CNN contributor and 2019 Roddenberry Foundation Fellow). Trainees were educated on the history of the black lives matter movement and acquainted with the movement's key principles and demands.
On Wednesday (8/26), the organization hosted a special virtual town hall Ballroom 2020 and the COVID epidemic organized by house members Aaron Cope Jr. and Kalvin Leveille. The town hall was facilitated by award-winning actress/Garcon member Angelica Ross (co-star of the Emmy Award winning series POSE.) During the town hall members of the house ball community developed strategies for addressing the COVID crisis in black LGBTQ communities.
On Friday (8/28) nearly one hundred members of the organization descended upon the shores of Washington, DC to participate in the NAN march as well as a myriad of other social justice initiatives organized by the House of Garcon. In attendance were LGBTQ Activist Twiggy Pucci Garcon and actress Sara Ramirez, who recently announced that she identifies as non-binary, tweeted an image of herself participating in the NAN March with the House of Garcon with the hashtags: AllBlackLivesMatter and GarconWays
