UCBC offers access to latest, greatest cancer treatment therapies
ATHENS, Ga., May 25, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- University Cancer & Blood Center (UCBC), a leading oncology and hematology practice for Northeast Georgia, is recognizing National Cancer Research Month by promoting the importance of participating in clinical trials. UCBC stays at the forefront of cancer research, and patients looking for the latest in cancer treatment can choose UCBC with confidence.
"Cancer patients, no matter where they are in their cancer journey, should first consider a clinical trial for any type therapy, because it's based on the latest information and scientific research," says UCBC clinical research manager, Mary Egan. "A clinical trial is not a last resort, but can be the first line of defense."
UCBC's Clinical Research Program has been in place for more than 20 years and has grown into one of the most robust programs in the state. They have participated in trials that have led to major publications and approvals. In fact, some drugs tested during UCBC clinical trials have become a standard of care.
For example, a 2014 immunotherapy trial for non-small cell lung cancer treatment resulted in drug approval the following year. Many of the patients who were treated in that trial are still alive today, which is a substantially improved outcome for those facing that type of cancer.
"We have had patients travel from all over the country and even around the world participate in our clinical trials," Egan says. "And trial participation allows patients to receive these newer and best treatments years before they are available on the market or outside of a trial."
With its Northeast Georgia location, UCBC is providing access to clinical trials and innovative therapies without area patients having to travel to larger cities. Additionally, UCBC uses grant assistance to help enroll minority and underserved patients into clinical trials.
UCBC clinical trial participants receive seamless, comprehensive care. Patients retain their same care team, along with a team of researchers, who collaborate throughout the entire experience. This provides an extra level of support.
"Clinical trials have a broad impact on cancer treatment," says Egan. "By participating in a clinical trial, the patient is not only helping themselves, but also providers, researchers, and future patients."
