WellCare Celebrates Seniors in the Bronx and Brooklyn
Tampa, Fla. (PRWEB) October 04, 2013 -- WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG), a leading provider of managed care services for government-sponsored health care programs, recently hosted award ceremonies in the Bronx and Brooklyn to honor seniors making a difference in their communities. The awards were the culmination of a month of activities for seniors in both boroughs, sponsored and created by WellCare in partnership with State Senator Eric Adams (D – New York) and Bronx Borough President Rubin Diaz, Jr.
More than 20 seniors and senior center directors from both boroughs were honored with New York State Senate and Bronx Borough Hall citations for service to their communities. This is the second year that WellCare co-sponsored the month-long senior celebration that included informational resource fairs on health and wellness, as well as events to foster physical activity and social engagement.
In the Bronx, representatives from Urban Health Plan, a local community health center, and Grandparents Advocacy Group joined Deputy Bronx Borough President Aurelia Greene, who represented Diaz, and Assemblywoman Vanessa L. Gibson (D – New York) at the awards ceremony.
“Our senior citizens are the heart of this community and I am proud to partner with WellCare to honor them during the month of September,” said Diaz. “Bronx Senior Month is a wonderful opportunity to provide them with health information and activities. We have a rich history in the Bronx thanks to our elders, who continue to make invaluable contributions to our community.”
In Brooklyn, State Senator John Sampson (D – New York), State Senator Diane Savino (D – New York), Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny (D – New York), and District Leaders Jesse Hamilton and Renee Collymore joined Senator Adams in congratulating the winners.
“I am elated to partner with my colleagues in government, senior centers in my district and with WellCare to host the second Brooklyn Seniors Month,” said Senator Adams. “Our senior citizens have paved the way for many of us to achieve our goals. Kudos to WellCare for putting seniors first.”
“We have been serving seniors in Brooklyn and the Bronx for more than a decade, and we welcome the opportunity to continue helping them lead better, healthier lives,” said John Burke, interim state president, WellCare of New York. “We are proud to partner with Senator Adams and Borough President Diaz to educate seniors about their health, and to honor them for their many contributions to these communities.”
