EAGLE RIVER, Wis., Dec. 2, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Eagle River transforms into the Snowmobile Capital of the World® every time the snow flies. Thousands of snowmobilers take to the area in winter for their own adventures along nearly 100 miles of groomed trails in the Eagle River area, which are part of a 600-mile network of trails in Vilas County.
Perfect for small groups, snowmobiling is an excellent way to experience the natural world while creating lifetime memories. Tourists who visit Eagle River trails help support local businesses, too.
Besides snowmobiling, Eagle River is perhaps best known for ice fishing. In the perfect social distancing sport, hundreds of anglers set up their ice shacks on many of the area's lakes, drill fishing holes and arrange tip-ups to haul in the catch of the day.
Cross country skiing, snowshoeing and fat tire biking are among the most popular activities during winter in Eagle River. With separate silent sport trails, these physical endeavors offer breathtaking views around frozen lakes and bountiful wildlife throughout wooded areas. Area rental shops can provide visitors with all the proper equipment to embark on these physically engaging outdoor activities.
A statewide favorite, the Eagle River Ice Castle has been known to draw visitors from hundreds of miles away to capture its beauty near the railroad depot. Since the 1920s, a new design is created and built by the Eagle River Fire Department and qualified volunteers every year with ice harvested from Silver Lake. This undertaking is weather dependent and the fate of this year's castle is still being determined.
The Eagle River area is also planning on continuing a pair of long-time traditions in early 2021*. The 57th annual World Championship Snowmobile Derby at the World Championship Derby Complex is expected to be held January 14-17, 2021. The Vintage Derby is the weekend before, running from January 8 through 10. And for the 15th time, Dollar Lake will be the site for the Labatt Blue USA Adult Pond Hockey Championships from February 4-7, 2021. Both events are taking additional safety precautions to meet recommendations from the Vilas County Health Department, including the restriction of no spectators at Pond Hockey.
