YAKIMA, Wash., March 8, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Trevor Greene was named superintendent on Friday, March 01, 2019, after a special meeting called by the Yakima School District Board of Directors. Greene, who was not in attendance, earned the unanimous support of the Board after separate interview sessions with multiple constituency groups - students, community members, district staff, central office staff, district leadership, and the Board of Directors.

At the media announcement, Raymond Navarro, Yakima School Board President declared, "Mr. Greene has the heart and the passion for all students and the core belief that all students can achieve their dreams and goals. He believes that his job is to prepare all students regardless of their background, regardless of their income." He clarify further, stating, "We feel Trevor Greene is a great fit for the board's vision for the future of the Yakima School District. His passion and enthusiasm for public education were apparent in his interviews."
Greene joins the Yakima School District after having served in two executive director positions over five years in the Highline School District (located in the greater Seattle area). During his tenure, he was both an executive director of human resources and of instructional leadership, achieving tremendous increases leading to improved graduation rates and in recruiting staff of color to a district serving five municipalities where over 100 languages are spoken. Prior to his time in the greater Seattle area, he completed the first Washington State Principal Fellowship, in a partnership with the Association of Washington School Principals and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Serving a diverse population of over 16,000 students, the Yakima School District is the 19th largest school district in Washington, the fourth largest in Eastern Washington, and the second largest Latino-majority district in the state. Greene, who is fluent in Spanish, graduated from Davis High School and was a teacher for 11 years at Wilson Middle School and Eisenhower High School - all of which are schools in the District.
Greene was named the 2012 Washington State Principal of the Year and is the first Native American to be named as the National Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. As a principal on the Yakima Indian Reservation, where poverty indicators exceed 80%, his students achieved a 93.5% graduation rate, state science scores improved by 67%, and writing scores consistently outperformed the state average. Greene, raised in the state, is an enrolled member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Greene was endorsed by the Yakama Nation and the executive board of the teacher's association, among others, prior to his endorsement by the school board. He will look to transition to the District as quickly as possible, but is officially scheduled to take on the duties of superintendent of the Yakima School District in early July.
