2 Months Left to Claim Your RM1,000 GMBO Grant

Kuala Lumpur (PRWEB) October 31, 2013 -- The GMBO grant is an initiative by the Malaysian government that was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Najib Razak under Budget 2013. Short for “Get Malaysian Business Online”, the government has allocated RM50 million for the program, primarily to help micro businesses in the country, especially women entrepreneurs, put their business on the Internet.

“There are about 700,000 SMEs in Malaysia but only 100,000 of them have an online presence”, said Cammy Lau, the CEO of Axcess Web Hosting Malaysia.

The grant is meant to help subsidize the cost of the domain name and web hosting fees. The annual fee for a local .com.my domain name currently costs RM80, while a basic shared hosting package from a local Malaysian hosting provider costs as low as RM200 a year. The cost of dedicated server hosting is a lot more expensive at RM700 a month for a Quad Core Xeon with 32GB ECC RAM and Dual 1TB HDD.

To qualify for the RM1,000 grant, the applicant has to fulfill the following requirements:

  • a Malaysian citizen between 18 to 65 years old.
  • have a registered company (ROC) or business (ROB).
  • have a local .my domain name and a working website.
  • have an Internet broadband subscription.
  • have a local bank account under the name of the applicant, business or company.

Priority will be given to micro businesses with less than 10 full-time employees and earning less than RM200,000 annual revenue.

Application is done online at SKMM’s GMBO page by furnishing information about the applicant, business or company, Internet broadband provider and bank account .

The applicant can check the approval status on the same website at any time, by providing the IC number and application reference number respectively. Once approved, the RM1,000 will be deposited directly into the bank account provided in the application form.

“There is only two months left to apply for the grant because the program runs from January to December 2013. There have been talks that the government may extend the program to next year if the money is not fully disbursed, but there hasn’t been any official word yet”, said Cammy.
