A Foodie's Dream Destination: Enjoy a Taste of New Smyrna Beach
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (PRWEB) June 19, 2019 -- New Smyrna Beach is peppered with one-of-a-kind eateries, bars, and delicious events that celebrate one of our favorite things—good grub. Our barrier island is almost entirely comprised of independent restaurants.
New on the dining scene in 2019:
- The Local Pearl Oyster Shoppe: Local restauranteurs Henry and Michelle Salgado are behind this tide-to-table eatery that’s located in New Smyrna Beach’s historic Canal Street district. Menu offerings are inventive, with thoughtfully selected appetizers and mains, like the smoked brisket tacos with corn relish and avocado. The standout is, of course, the raw bar. Delicious oysters and clams are served with a mignonette sauce, house cocktail, and crackers. Chef Henry Salgado is a two-time James Beard Foundation Award semifinalist.
- Cool Treats for NSB: The newest kid on the ice cream block has something special just for adults. Boozy flavors like the Mystic Slide (a blend of Kahlua, amaretto and a splash of vodka) or the Butterscotch Cookie (butterscotch schnapps with a sweet crunch) make this ice cream parlor a favorite spot for grown-ups. All the frozen treats are made from scratch, so you know you’re getting the real deal.
NSB Foodie Favorites:
- If you ever dreamed of living in a treehouse as a child, then a stop at Norwood’s in New Smyrna Beach is a must. Nestled in a large live oak tree, this local gem is a whimsical welcoming beacon to visitors and locals alike. Leafy branches are ensconced by expansive decking, where patrons can sip on a hand-crafted cocktail from the aptly-named Treehouse Bar and order from a well curated menu of appetizers. At night, dangling Edison-style bulbs illuminate the boughs, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
- Featured on the Travel Channel, The Garlic is known for its signature, slow-roasted—you guessed it—garlic and crusty bread. A wood-fired oven, imported from Italy, is used to roast the popular appetizer as well as mouthwatering entrees like fresh cut salmon and pepper bacon wrapped filet mignon. A cozy, verdant courtyard adds to the appeal. Trees wrapped in lights, rustic wooden tables, and a vine covered arbor transport you from east central Florida to the Italian countryside.
- With romantic chandeliers, giant trees, and a unique fire feature, the patio at Third Wave Café is a charming oasis for those needing a respite after a day on the beach. But it’s what’s going on inside the kitchen that’s really making waves. Third Wave Café is an active member of the James Beard Foundation and Smart Catch Program, which trains and supports chefs in serving seafood fished or farmed in environmentally responsible ways.
- Do you yearn for the days of poodle skirts and leather jackets? If so, you'll want to make a stop at Little Drug Co. on historic Canal Street. This full-service pharmacy is still serving up ice cream sodas and malted shakes from its original 1950s soda fountain. Stop in for cool treat and experience classic Americana.
- Can’t decide what you want to try? Sign up for one of EAT NSB’ s walking food tours to sample offerings from multiple eateries on historic Canal Street or Flagler Avenue. Food and beverages are provided at up to 6 different stops. Tickets are $60.
NSB Food-centric Events:
New Smyrna Beach is also home to a variety of food-centric events. Some occur monthly, while others are annual favorites.
It’s no surprise that seafood has secured a special place in the hearts of NSB foodies. The Shrimp and Seafood Festival is held each August on Flagler Avenue. Local restaurants serve up sample-sized portions of their award-winning dishes for approximately $3 to $5 each.
Each December, Norwood’s Eatery and Treehouse Bar hosts its Holiday Food and Wine Festival. Sample over 300 wines and selections of food pairings. A VIP ticket ($150), which grants early access, gets you a $30 wine voucher and a commemorative glass.
If you require a glass of grapes a little more often, then the monthly Wine Walk down Flagler Avenue is a must. For $25, you can buy a wine tasting passport with 20 tasting tickets and keepsake wine glass. Sample your choice from more than 100 showcased wines as you stroll down bustling Flagler Avenue. The event takes place on the fourth Saturday of each month, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Hops lovers will want to take part in the monthly Craft Beer Walk. Held on Canal Street, the heart of New Smyrna Beach’s historic downtown, the beer walk is on the first Saturday of each month. Tickets are $20 and include a six-ounce souvenir glass and 12 sampling tickets.
