Aberdeen Heights Assisted Living Residents Crochet for Kids in Crisis
TULSA, Okla. (PRWEB) March 27, 2019 -- For Aberdeen Heights Assisted Living resident Ron M., crochet took a little time to pick up. Not quite getting the hang of it right away, he took instructions, yarn and a needle back to his apartment. Practicing his loops, knots and chains technique at meals, while waiting for the community bus or as he relaxed in common areas, he learned the craft. These days, he seldom needs help working the yarn into a blanket edge.
“He asked about learning to crochet when he knew what it was for,” said Aberdeen Heights Assisted Living Lifestyles Director, Amber Lowrey. “A few of us showed him. He was determined and learned it mostly on his own. It warms my heart when residents come in weekly with a desire to do something for someone else. Especially someone like Ron, who has never crocheted before. He stepped out of his comfort zone for something he cares about.”
Aberdeen Heights Assisted Living residents are crocheting the edges on small comfort blankets with a local charity, Joy in the Cause (Tulsa, Oklahoma). The blankets are packed into backpacks with books, a plush toy (which calms children in frightening situations), colored pencils, a special T-shirt, toiletries, sandals and a flashlight that doesn’t require batteries. The supplies are given to local police, fire and care flight crews which are given to a child in a crisis.
These days, Ron sits with his friends when they come together to finish projects. Occasionally, he gets teased by other residents about sitting with the ladies.
“It’s for the kids,” Ron says. “I’d do anything for the kids. Even if it means being the only man in the group.”
The volunteers say their crocheting is rewarding and they plan to keep up the good work.
