Arizona Non-Profit Leader Honored at Scottsdale's MLK Celebration Event
HeroZona Co-Founder Among Honorees at 28th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration Dinner
PHOENIX, Jan. 11, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The HeroZona Foundation is excited to announce its co-founder, Alan "AP" Powell, will be one of the honorees recognized at the 28th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration Dinner hosted by the Scottsdale nonprofit, Community Celebrating Diversity (CCD), on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Additional honorees include Interim President at Scottsdale Community College Chris Haines and ONE Community & ONE Community Foundation co-founder/president Angela Hughey.
Alan "AP" Powell, co-founded HeroZona and currently serves as chairman and CEO of AP & Associates, LLC, founded in 2004. Since the firm's inception, Powell's business philosophy has been "turning contacts into contracts." His diverse industry experience includes work with companies like ISC, Diageo, Harley-Davidson, Coca-Cola, University of Phoenix, and Miller-Coors. Powell has previously served as an advisory board member for Arizona 7th District Congressman Ruben Gallego's Veterans Advisory Council, the University of Phoenix Criminal Justice Industry Advisory Board, City of Phoenix Aviation Advisory Board, and District 8's African American Advisory Council.
Powell was recently recognized with the Arizona Black Chamber of Commerce Corporate Star Award (2016), the MLK Living the Dream Award (2017), Greater Phoenix Urban League's Whitney M. Young Jr. Award (2017), the American Association for Access, Equity and Diversity's Edward M. Kennedy Community Service Award (2017), ABC 15 and Sanderson Ford's Saluting Arizona's Veterans Award (2018), Humanitarian Award from South Mountain Community College (2019), NAACP Community Service Award (2020), and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Award of Merit (2021). He also served as the Grand Marshall for the Phoenix Veterans Day Parade in 2017 and was honored by Arizona Public Service with the John S. McCain Inspiration Leadership Award in November of 2018. Powell also won 2019's "Most Influential Man in the Valley" by Arizona Foothills Magazine.
Powell has previously served as an advisory board member for Arizona 7th District Congressman Ruben Gallego's Veterans Advisory Council, the University of Phoenix Criminal Justice Industry Advisory Board, City of Phoenix Aviation Advisory Board, and District 8's African American Advisory Council. Powell served on the advisory board for the Phoenix Theatre.

It was an instrumental organization in creating the largest COVID-19 testing site in 2020 and co-launching the OneCommunity Initiative, which focuses on reaching diverse, underserved communities, and aims to track demographic data to identify disparity gaps and ensure that the vaccines are distributed fairly and equitably.
Scottsdale's MLK Celebration was initiated by CCD's founding members, Sandra Rembrandt and Don Logan, in the early 1990's. Today, the event serves as a signature celebration for the entire Valley that includes nationally renowned speakers representing a myriad of diversity perspectives honoring the history and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
