Children’s Museum Leaders Explore Bold Ideas at InterActivity 2019

The Association of Children’s Museums will convene hundreds of leaders from children’s museums and supporting organizations to share knowledge and advocate for the field during its annual InterActivity conference. Hosted by the Children’s Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus from May 8–11, InterActivity 2019’s theme is FearLESS, exploring what it means for children’s museums to be brave, bold, and to think big.

WHY
The InterActivity conference brings the industry together in support of ACM’s goal to ensure that every family and child has access to a high-quality children’s museum experience. Started in 1962, ACM is a professional member organization for the children’s museum field. ACM member museums and professionals are dedicated to early childhood play, the starting point in the continuum of lifelong learning.

Wednesday, May 8
Meet & Greet with National Student Poet Ariana Smith, 6:15 p.m.–7:30 p.m. MDT: Ariana Smith is one of five teens chosen as 2018 National Student Poets, the highest honor for U.S. youth poets presenting original work. The National Student Poets Program is a partnership between the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, which presents the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. She will lead attendees in an erasure poetry workshop.
Thursday, May 9
ACM Great Friend to Kids Award, 9:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m. MDT: Dr. Temple Grandin is recipient of the 2019 ACM Great Friend to Kids Award for her outstanding accomplishments in increasing our understanding of autism and the need for different kinds of minds to solve problems. Her insights are particularly valuable to children's museums, most of which have programs for children on the autism spectrum and their families and caregivers. The ACM Great Friend to Kids Award is presented annually at InterActivity and honors those who have made significant contributions to strengthen education and advance the interests of children.

ACM MarketPlace, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. MDT: InterActivity’s signature expo hall shares the latest in products and services supporting the children’s museum field. More than 70 exhibitors share expertise in exhibit design, virtual reality, administrative support, toys, art supplies, and more.
Keynote – Gever Tulley, 9:00 a.m.-10:15 a.m. MDT: Gever Tulley is founder of Tinkering School and Brightworks, and author of Fifty Dangerous Things (You Should Let Your Children Do). In his keynote address, Gever Tulley will explore and share his experiments in high-engagement learning and how a few simple ideas have changed the lives of the students he has worked with.

Exploring the Future of Childhood: An Armchair Conversation with Jordan Shapiro, 10:30 a.m.–11:45 a.m. MDT: Futurist Dr. Jordan Shapiro is author of The New Childhood: Raising Kids to Thrive in a Connected World. In an armchair discussion with Tifferney White, chief learning officer at Discovery Place, he will explore how the evolving digital landscape provides opportunities and challenges for parents and educators in stewarding children in an increasingly connected world.
