Debut Novel Documents Lesser-Known Navy Contributions to the Vietnam War
Author and veteran shares incidents of the U.S. Navy's Coastal Surveillance Force in new historical fiction novel
SUN CITY, Calif., Aug. 7, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- In "Coastal Warfare Against the Vietcong Vol. 1: 1964-1966," author and retired Navy veteran James Steffes provides readers an exhilarating fiction book based on historic events of the Coastal Surveillance Force in the Vietnam War.
Using the Commander Naval Forces Vietnam Monthly Summaries (COMNAVFORV) as the historical reference for the book, Steffes crafts a story steeped in action of the inception of the Coastal Surveillance Force and a group of sailors, known as the U.S. Navy's Brown Water Navy, tasked with stopping the flow of men and weapons smuggled into South Vietnam by sea.
The book tells the untold story of the sailors of the Coastal Surveillance Force. Using fictitious characters to tell the true story of major incidents involving Navy and Coast Guardsmen, as well as small ships patrolling the coastlines and the entrances to rivers, Steffes brings readers into the action of battling a tough enemy and rough coastline sailors endured, all while assisting the Allied Ground Operations with blocking forces.
"The Navy took a long-lost way to fight – going all the back to the Civil War – and they developed it into an operation that sealed off the coastline from the enemy," said Steffes. "We created the Ho Chi Min Trail because we stopped them from moving anything by water."
Using the COMNAVFORV, along with his personal experience and details gathered from other veterans, Steffes weaves together historical fact and well-crafted fiction in a story that transports the readers to the early years of the Vietnam War.
"Very little has been written about the Navy during the Vietnam War. As someone who served, I felt that our story needed to be told, too," said Steffes. "We fought in the brown water in the Mekong Delta and this book details the beginning of it."
