F.A. Davis Announces Winners of Semi-Annual Undergraduate & Graduate Nursing Scholarships
Students from Queens University & Columbia University win F.A. Davis Nursing Scholarships.
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- F.A. Davis is delighted to announce the winners of its semi-annual undergraduate and graduate nursing scholarships. An award of $1,500.00 will be made to both Vivian Fu, an RN-BSN student in the Bachelor of Nursing Science program at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and to Kelsey Naruse, a DNP student in the Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program at Columbia University School of Nursing in New York, New York.
Our undergraduate scholarship winner, Vivian Fu, discovered her passion for nursing while at her grandfather's bedside in the hospital. There, Ms. Fu carefully observed the care he received and came to understand how a nurse's interactions with a patient and his family can completely change how a traumatic circumstance is experienced or perceived. "To truly understand and care meant being empathetic, patient, compassionate and kind. It was ultimately the peace and comfort I witnessed on my grandfather's face as he passed that I knew the nurse was successful at her job and that I wanted to be a nurse."
In her application essay, Ms. Fu described the impact she hopes to have after she earns her degree. "I want to be able to bring others this peace and comfort. I want to listen, understand others, and meet their needs. I hope to be able to change how families, friends and patients encounter death, or how they perceive the hospital. I want to create for others a space of comfort and care. I would love to be a nurse because I am passionate about caring for people, and I want to continue growing and learning from each individual I encounter."
In her application essay, our graduate scholarship winner, Kelsey Naruse, described one of the patients "who remind[s] me that I made the right choice to become a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP)." "'Ian' looks like any other nine-year-old. He likes to play basketball and watch TV, but he is not like other nine-year-old boys. Ian has epilepsy. It's 7:45 a.m. and I am starting my morning rounds. Before I could say anything, he said, 'I already know what you're going to do. You're going to make me sit up and take deep breaths.' I laughed and said, 'Okay, since you know the drill, why don't you help me?'" "As I continued my assessment, he asked why I had to listen to his belly sounds. While trying to explain this, my own stomach let out a very audible growling noise. We both made eye contact and burst into laughter. He told me, as he pointed to my stethoscope, 'I don't even need one of those to hear your belly sounds.'" Ms. Naruse then continues to describe the dedication and compassion that drives her to achieve her goals. "There is a certain joy about working with children and their families that is indescribable. While working with sick children is often challenging, both clinically and emotionally, their innocence, sincerity, and resilience fuels my passion."
"Applications from undergraduate and graduate nursing students continue to far exceed all of our expectations," said Jean Rodenberger, Editor-in-Chief, Nursing. "Our applicant pool was extremely diverse. Our undergraduate applicants encompassed traditional college freshmen and non-traditional students returning to school. The graduate students, too, represented a vast range of backgrounds and goals. Selecting the winners were difficult decisions, but Ms. Fu and Ms. Naruse in their applications and essays demonstrated the very special nature of those who have chosen to be nurses. Their stories are inspiring to all of us. With Ms. Fu and Ms. Naruse leading the way, the future of nursing looks bright as a new generation of dedicated students embarks on the challenging yet rewarding path of becoming a nurse."
The application process was open to nursing students pursuing undergraduate degrees leading to NCLEX® eligibility (RN and LPN level), and graduate degrees leading to a DNP, MSN, or PhD. Applicants were required to be enrolled in an accredited nursing program for the 2017 school year, students in good standing with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher, and U.S. or Canadian citizens, legal residents, or holders of a valid student visa. Each completed an application form and submitted an unofficial transcript and proof of enrollment as well as a short introduction and essay. Information about future scholarships will be announced on F.A. Davis's web and social media sites.
The scholarship prize can be used for educational purposes only, which includes tuition and/or related expenses such as books or school supplies required by instructors for their courses. (Room and board and other taxable expenses do not qualify.)
