Sophie and Madigan's Playground Announces Groundbreaking for the Sophie and Madigan Lillard Memorial Playground in Westside Regional Park
FREDERICK, Md., Sept. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The City of Frederick and Sophie and Madigan's Playground will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on September 9, 2020 at 2pm to begin construction of the Sophie and Madigan Lillard Memorial Playground.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the site of the Sophie and Madigan Lillard Memorial Playground, located on Contender Way within the Westside Regional Park in Frederick, Maryland. The ceremony will also be streamed virtually on Facebook Live (@CityofFrederick) or on the City of Frederick's YouTube Page (cityofrederickmd.gov/videos).
The Sophie and Madigan Lillard Memorial Playground will be completed in three phases. This groundbreaking ceremony will mark the beginning of construction of the first phase, which is expected to be completed in approximately six to eight weeks. Phases 2 and 3 will be completed at future dates to be determined.
Phase 1 of the Sophie and Madigan Lillard Memorial Playground will be referred to as Fantasyland and feature a three-story tall Creative Castle fronting a play structure full of slides, climbers, and bridges. The castle will be surrounded by play features that include a custom pumpkin carriage, a sunny kingdom spinner, a climbing hill, and a rainbow swing area filled with unique swing opportunities like fully accessible swing seats, nest swings, and traditional belt swings. The Fantasyland playground area will feature fully accessible custom ground cover, along with other adaptations to ensure that kids of all abilities can play together.
The Sophie and Madigan Lillard Memorial Playground will be part of the City of Frederick's Westside Regional Parkand the playground amenities will be available to the public as part of the City of Frederick Parks and Recreation system.
An additional announcement will be made once Fantasyland (Phase I) construction is completed and the playground area is open to the public.

Sophie and Madigan's Playground is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization created in June 2013 to honor the lives of Sophie and Madigan Lillard by providing opportunities for children and their families to play, learn, and create lifelong memories together. Sophie and Madigan's Playground's primary project is the Sophie and Madigan Lillard Memorial Playground which will be a destination playground located in Frederick, Maryland and feature fully accessible ground covering and other adaptations to ensure that kids of all abilities have the opportunity to play together.
