The Joy of November in Provincetown
PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (PRWEB) October 12, 2018 -- With the pilgrims landing here first, the Mayflower Compact signed in our harbor, streets named Bradford, Allerton, Brewster, Howland, and Carver to name just a few, we are the very seat of history, we ARE Thanksgiving. This is the time to really dig in to Provincetown. The weather is cooling and there’s a feeling of hunkering down, preparing for the winter. But there’s also that festive, holiday feeling.
And there’s still lots to do. We light up the darkening sky with the annual Lighting of the Pilgrim Monument, and we light up Lopes Square with the annual Lighting of the Lobster Pot Tree. These two festive events have morphed into whole celebrations, and they bookend that wonderful holiday, Thanksgiving. Locals come home to their families, visitors gather for meals; it’s a wonderful time to come to Provincetown!
Following on the heels of Halloween, we have the culmination of the third annual Day of the Dead Festival (beginning October 20th), a celebration of life and death through art. On Friday, November 2, there is a procession down Commercial St. (we love a parade!) ending at the Provincetown Theater where there is an Offrenda exhibit, performing arts, and a dance with a DJ. It is a festival designed to honor the Mexican and Mesoamerican roots of El Dia de los Muertos while simultaneously creating a community event unique to Provincetown.
Friday, November 9 kicks off a special Provincetown Men’s Weekend (formerly called Single Men’s Weekend but now all men are welcomed) which will feature a meet-and-eat-buffet, disco night, leather night, an underwear party, and a piano bar, to list just a few of the features. It runs all weekend…
Another draw for men, Mr. New England Leather Weekend begins Friday, November 16, contestants compete and the winner gets to represent this region at the International Mr. Leather Contest in Chicago in May, wow! Here’s the link for contest info: http://mrnewenglandleather.org/contest.html
The following week ushers in Thanksgiving, with the Lighting of the Pilgrim Monument on Wednesday, November 21. Perched on the top of High Pole Hill Rd., the largest all-granite building in the country proudly commemorates the landing of the pilgrims, and on this night, Provincetown lights up 3100 individual lights, strung from the top of the monument, which continue to shine until January 6. It is a sight to behold, and there is always a big party, with light refreshments and entertainment. This is an annual tradition not to be missed!
On Thanksgiving Day, you can express your thanks for the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) by participating in the Pilgrim Trot 5K, on Thursday, November 23 at 9am at the Sandcastle Resort.
Another lighting, is the Lighting of the Lobster Pot Tree in Lopes Square, which happens Saturday, November 24. This year the family of Julian Popko will create the tree, using over 100 stacked lobster pots, complete with ribbons and lights. It’s another festive event, and it happens right in the center of town!
Provincetown is full of creative people, artists, writers, musicians. Our craft fairs are unique and exciting and just in time for your gift giving. To that end, the Unitarian Universalist Church sponsors a craft fair on Friday, November 23 and Saturday, November 24, while the Lions Club sponsors their own fair on those same two days at the Provincetown Town Hall.
Speaking of gifts, our huge holiday celebration, Holly Folly, begins on Friday, November 30 and runs until Sunday, December 2. Stores participate in a town-wide contest with prizes for shoppers (and lots of sales!), the Gay Men’s Chorus performs, and there is even a Santa run in Speedos down Commercial St. It’s Provincetown’s fun interpretation of a traditional holiday, and extremely well-attended.
It’s a cozy time. Provincetown boasts over 100 bed and breakfasts, over 30 of which have fireplaces. Come down, cozy up, and celebrate Thanksgiving in the seat of the Pilgrim’s first landing!
