‘Illegals’ receives new marketing push for 2014
OCEAN CITY, N.J. (PRWEB) April 15, 2014 -- In 2012 alone, according to the Department of Homeland Security, 643,000 foreign nationals were detained. Seventy percent of those apprehended were Mexican citizens. In her book, “Illegals” (published by Trafford Publishing), author Laura Lavayén chronicles the journeys of a group of fictional illegal immigrants to the United States.
The story unfolds in the city of Philadelphia, where married couple Mariana and Pedro live under temporary worker status. Yet their stay in America is deemed illegal when they try to apply for permanent U.S. residency.
Mariana and Pedro’s story comes to involve coyotes – illegal immigrant smugglers – along with a detective, document forgers, a determined lawyer and other illegal immigrant characters whose time in the U.S. is also plagued by uncertainty.
“I came to this country at a time when it was easy to get a contract and come legally, but I met many people who came later and have always lived in fear of deportation,” Lavayén says. “I have seen other cases where the persons don’t know of their illegal status for several reasons. Be that as it is, sometimes I re-read ‘Illegals’ and I feel like their characters do actually exist and they are real, so I want to be able to help the real people. But I don’t not know how to, except through my novels and my writing.”
