AdvancED Launches Generation Beta Series on Issues Facing Education
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) March 26, 2014 -- Jobs today demand science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) knowledge and competencies, and yet, too few STEM programs are available and too few students are engaged in them. To bring into focus the critical need for quality STEM education for students to compete and engage on a global level, AdvancED has launched the Generation Beta series to highlight successful programs focused on STEM.
AdvancED, the world leader in accreditation and school improvement, created the Generation Beta series to call attention to some of the most pressing problems facing our education system. For instance, in the U.S. less than 10 percent of high school students take a computer science class. Yet, it’s projected that by 2024 in the U.S. there will be one million more tech jobs than computer science graduates to fill them. But beyond highlighting problems and challenges, Generation Beta will showcase examples of innovative and successful education initiatives often started outside of the current system.
“As an organization, we at AdvancED are deeply committed to addressing the issues facing today’s learners in all their diversity,” said Dr. Mark A. Elgart, Ed.D., president and CEO of AdvancED. “We believe initiatives like those featured in Generation Beta should be integrated into a standard education system that is truly learner centric.”
The first video in the series features two programs in Miami, Fl. – Venture Hive and The Lab – that draw students of all ages and from all walks of life into the technology world, providing them opportunities to learn to develop and code games, web sites and applications. All episodes in the series will feature student perspectives on programs, inside and outside of the established K-12 system, that inspire them.
“We must focus on meeting the individual needs of today’s learners while preparing them for a world of opportunities, challenges and careers yet to be imagined,” said Elgart.
