artnet Auctions Presents - Band of Outsiders: Self-Taught Artists
New York/Berlin (PRWEB) July 24, 2013 -- artnet Auctions is proud to present Band of Outsiders: Self-Taught Artists, a live auction of works by Outsider artists such as William L. Hawkins (American, 1985–1990), Anna Zemánková (Czech, 1908–1986), Carlo Zinelli (Italian, 1916–1974), and Madge Gill (British, 1882–1961), with estimates ranging from US$1,500–55,000.
Included in the sale are two works on paper by the visionary, self-taught artist Anna Zemánková. Untitled (Abstract Pattern) and Untitled have an estimate range of US$6,000–10,000. In her characteristic hallucinatory style, repetitions of vertical lines, pixel-like squares, and sweeping petals depict fantastical and hypnotic botanical scenes. These surreal drawings exemplify a fascination with, and exploration of, a realm beyond our own.
Also featured in this curated selection of works is an exceptional gouache on paper by Carlo Zinelli, estimated at US$15,000–25,000. Mentally unstable and unable to communicate verbally, Zinelli filled his compositions with a personal visual language of figures, forms, and letters. With his typical rhythmic and lyrical patterns derived from musical structures and harmonies, Uomo seduto con Uccello nella is representative of the sophisticated and complex work produced during the last years of Zinelli’s life.
Another highlight of the sale is Untitled (Woman with Patterned Archways), an ink on cardboard piece by British Outsider artist, Madge Gill. Typical of her work is the portrayal of her spirit guide, “Myrninerest,” who takes the form of a young woman in many of her expressive drawings. Seamlessly integrated into the elaborate background of geometric and organic design, this recurring motif was the force which drove her artistic obsession and feverish production of such drawings.
The sale will also include 1948 M.G. MIDGET, an enamel on masonite work by William L. Hawkins, estimated at US$35,000–55,000. Reflecting his highly individual, fantastical perception of popular culture, as well as his interest in nostalgia, this work exemplifies the vibrant, painterly style for which Hawkins is known.
Band of Outsiders: Self-Taught Artists will be live on artnet Auctions from July 23 through July 30, 2013, and on view here.
