Asheville Academy Supports National Diabetes Month with Healthy Living Philosophy
Asheville, NC (PRWEB) November 21, 2013 -- Asheville Academy for Girls, a therapeutic boarding school for ages 10 – 14, has a mission to support healthy living in our students and their families. In the month of November, Asheville Academy supports National Diabetes month by focusing on education and support around Diabetes awareness.
Diabetes affects nearly 26 million Americans and an estimated 79 million people are at risk for developing the disease. Type 2 diabetes, once extremely rare among youth, has been growing rapidly in recent years as a greater number of children struggle with unhealthy lifestyles.
“According to the World Health Organization, type II diabetes was once only seen in adults but it is now also occurring in children,” commented Asheville Academy nutritionist Michelle Shelfer, RD, LDN, IBCLC. “Asheville Academy’s mission for our students includes direct education on healthy eating and lifestyle habits concepts that defend against Type 2 diabetes.”
The National Institute of Health (NIH) suggests the following to decrease the risk of type II diabetes in children: maintain a healthy weight, be physically active, eat smaller portions of healthy foods, and limit time with the TV, computer, and video. Asheville Academy’s therapeutic boarding school focuses on following NIH guidelines. Students are offered physical education with trained professionals and have lots of active “play” time. Screen time is limited. The school employs a nutritionist and chef with a nutrition background to do menu planning, classroom instruction, and in-kitchen instruction.
“Asheville Academy supports diabetes awareness by providing quality food choices for our students as well as education around how to fix balanced meals with moderate carbohydrates,” added Chef Casey Maness. “Our approach is to teach the students how to make healthy food choices that will last a lifetime. We teach portions, moderation, and mindful eating! ”
Asheville Academy for Girls’ supports education and prevention through sourcing meats locally and confirming they are vegetarian fed, hormone free, antibiotic free, with no preservatives. Fruits and vegetables are provided by local farmers market and delivered weekly. The Asheville Academy kitchen provides lots of clean protein, carbohydrates and vegetable options that help promote a healthy lifestyle for the girls at the therapeutic boarding school.
