AuDConnex USA Announces Scholarship Winners
Reno, NV (PRWEB) February 20, 2015 -- The first ever AuDConnex USA scholarship was awarded to two audiology doctoral students. AuDConnex, a collaborative audiology network/buying group recently offered audiology doctoral students the opportunity to apply for two $500 scholarships and a two-year membership to the Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA). “Giving back is a big part of our philosophy at AuDConnex. This scholarship allows us to help future audiologists, and share our message of independence and collaboration in the world of hearing healthcare,” says Dr. Michael Iliff, founding member of AuDConnex.
In order to be eligible, students were required to write a short essay (200 words or less) explaining why independent hearing care practices are important to the hearing healthcare community. “We had more than 40 students respond. The essays were not only impactful, but also refreshing. It’s good to know the independent and organic model is still important to our up and coming doctors of audiology,” Iliff adds.
The winners of the 2014 AuDConnex scholarships are University of Akron student Dana Patton and Northwestern University student Chase Smith.
In her essay Patton wrote in part, “Today, numerous players are eager to profit from audiologists. If we don’t control our destiny, others will do it for us. By working independently, we own our full scope of practice.” And Smith wrote, “These days it seems like national retailers are dominating the hearing healthcare landscape. For a large retailer like Costco, maximizing profitability in hearing healthcare can often mean patients are seen as customers first and patients second.”
“Winning feels a bit surreal. I have a fervent passion for private practice audiology, and to feel so validated in my opinions has been really great. Everyone at AuDConnex has been so warm and enthusiastic, it’s really refreshing,” says Smith.
“As a graduate student I need all the financial assistance I can get. But beyond that, it shows me that AudConnex is dedicated not only to helping private practices succeed, but also to supporting students who hope to become independent clinicians in the future. The support really means a lot to me,” says Patton.
“We are very proud of these two students and wish them all the best in their future careers as audiologists,” says Iliff.
