Bathroom Remodel in San Francisco: Jeff King & Company Joins Building Lab for San Francisco Master Suite Renovation
(PRWEB) April 15, 2015 -- Fine home builder Jeff King & Company collaborated with the design team at Building Lab for a unique remodel: turning a cramped master bath into a private spa nested in the trees.
This family of four needed to renovate their San Francisco home for added space and privacy. The top story’s north-facing room already had a panoramic view of Golden Gate Bridge, Ghirardelli Square and Alcatraz, making it feel expansive and welcoming to guests. The powder bathroom and adjacent master bathroom, however, faced the hillside trees and were claustrophobic. To claim as much square footage as possible, the design team decided to enclose the upstairs deck space for a 90 square foot en-suite master bath addition. Still space was a concern:
“Making a room feel bigger can be challenging when you have no view,” explains lead designer Stephen Shoup. “We saw this project as nesting a master bath into the trees: playing with the variegated light of being in foliage and creating an indoor/outdoor shower experience.”
An oversized picture window takes advantage of a shower wall concealed by trees while low-view windows splash light and greenery over the counter. Transom-height windows bring in glimpses of light between the powder room and master bathroom and a new skylight straddles the two spaces.
“We used translucent glass, mirrors and windows to invite a deeper look into the space,” tells Shoup. “Natural light is moving 365 days a year. The various exposures of light create a dynamic space.”
To balance this complex layering of architectural elements, the team used repeated geometry and an understated material palette. “The simpler and cleaner the material expressions, the bigger and deeper the space feels, ” says Shoup.
White painted sheetrock becomes a quiet backdrop for rich teak wood cabinetry and shelving. Handmade materials were selected to add subtle warmth and texture, including the custom concrete countertop and integrated sinks. The tiles are not machine-made, either: the floor is herringbone field limestone and the shower is Pratt & Larson parquet ceramic. Adding to the room’s warmth, these handmade materials have natural variance and a pleasant tactile quality.
To minimize the distraction of hardware, Jeff King & Company executed complex detailing including custom sliding glass doors. The track disappears right into the ceiling and the handle is carved directly into sandblasted glass, allowing the material to speak for itself without decoration.
With a small addition and new layout, the entire master suite is much more functional. Pocket doors separate the master bedroom, bathroom and closet so one person can get ready in the morning without disturbing the other. The powder room and master bathroom create the sense of a private treetop retreat.
“The homeowners now have a whole new experience moving through the top floor,” Shoup concludes. “Walking from the den to the master bathroom, one transitions from an expansive bay view to an otherworldly nest hidden in the trees.”
