Betty Pack to Present ‘Here I Am’ at 2014 Frankfurt Book Fair
San Antonio (PRWEB) December 16, 2013 -- Author Betty Pack uses the story of Abraham in the Old Testament to illustrate the sacrifices made by the men and women called to combat – and their families – following Saddam Hussein’s 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in her expansive new novel, “Here I Am: the Abraham Legacy” (published by AuthorHouse).
“Here I Am” is part gangland mystery, part historical fiction, part intra-cultural love story, part comedic drama. Tagged by the author as “a novel about letting go,” it revolves around the first Gulf War when the United States, under the banner Operation Desert Shield which was re-named Operation Desert Storm, sent thousands of military units to duty in the Arabian desert, a duty fraught (the media predicted) with bloody conflict and certain death.
In the Old Testament, God asked Abraham to sacrifice his young son, Isaac, but when the time came, God took the life of a ram instead. Pack likens Abraham’s story to the experiences of the loved ones of military members who were asked to leave their lives and homes to fight at their country’s request in its first major war since Viet Nam.
In particular, “Here I Am: the Abraham Legacy” focuses on the residents of Saverne, Texas, a fictional small town near the Mexican border, whose townspeople were called upon to surrender members of their community to Operation Desert Storm. Pack uses their individual and combined stories to reflect what was happening throughout America during a tumultuous time in our history, and her biblical comparison helps readers make sense of these –and other every day, every year – traumatizing life events.
Pack will present “Here I Am: the Abraham Legacy” at the 2014 Frankfurt Book fair, Oct. 8-12, 2014. The Frankfurt Book Fair, the world’s largest trade fair for books. More than 7,000 exhibitors from over 100 countries and more than 200,000 visitors are expected at the fair.
