Beyond Li-ion Batteries: ZPower Demonstrates Advantages of Silver-Zinc Microbattery Technology
CAMARILLO, Calif. (PRWEB) June 16, 2016 -- ZPower Director of Research Jeff Ortega, Ph.D., presented at the 229th Electrochemical Society Meeting, held on May 29 through June 3 of this year in San Diego. The international conference offered a blend of electrochemical and solid-state science and technology and served as a major forum for the discussion of interdisciplinary research from around the world.
Dr. Ortega reviewed published performance data for commercially available rechargeable Li-ion and Li-polymer cells compared to ZPower’s rechargeable silver-zinc (AgZn) button cells. The comparison demonstrated that silver-zinc cells offer greater capacity and energy densities over equivalently sized rechargeable Li-on and Li-polymer batteries.
According to Ortega, when silver-zinc is compared with the smallest Li-ion batteries available, the silver-zinc cell has a 57-percent greater energy density, whereas the largest silver-zinc cell is greater by 20 percent over the best performing Li-ion option available. He also said silver-zinc rechargeable microbatteries have been shown to be safer and better for the environment.
Ortega also introduced ZPower’s first commercial application, the award-winning Rechargeable System for Hearing Aids. He said, “The ZPower Rechargeable System for Hearing Aids makes it easy to convert many new and existing hearing aids to rechargeable technology. The Rechargeable System offers a full day of power, charges overnight in the hearing aids, takes the place of an estimated 200 disposable batteries and lasts a full year.”
Ortega said, "The ZPower hearing aid battery is replaced once per year by a hearing care professional, so the patient never has to touch a hearing aid battery again.”
At the meeting, Ortega said ZPower batteries are ideal for hearing aids, and their size, energy density and safety also make them ideal for medical device applications, body worn sensors, hearables, wearables and any other microbattery application that demands a long wear time.
