Blended Learning Success at Henry County Schools in the Spotlight with New Edgenuity Documentary
Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) May 06, 2014 -- Edgenuity, a leading provider of online and blended learning solutions, today announced the release of a documentary highlighting the success of online and blended learning at Henry County Schools, the 7th largest district in Georgia serving 40,000 students.
The film, “Opening Up a New World,” spotlights how Henry County Schools turned to technology as a means of addressing the diverse learning needs of its student population, driven by unprecedented population growth in the district. To watch the film, click here.
Henry County is now leveraging online and blended learning to efficiently and effectively meet the needs of students that were coming to its schools from a wide variety of backgrounds. Specifically, Henry County has introduced two cutting-edge blended learning models, the Locust Grove Middle School program and the Impact Academy.
- At Locust Grove, educators have transformed core coursework by combining self-paced online instruction and activities with face-to-face classwork led by highly qualified teachers. Teachers use data from students’ online activities to inform their planning for daily class time, closely connecting the work students do online with the work they do in class. And since students come to class already having learned basic content, teachers are able to raise the level of discourse and thinking to help students apply skills, debate ideas, and engage in projects and problem solving.
- At Impact Academy, students take courses online and receive personalized support from teachers. Students come to the Impact Academy program for a variety of reasons: to take classes that do not fit into their normal school schedule or are not offered on their local campus or when they need more personalized support than is offered in the traditional schedule. The model facilitates student independence and helps foster confidence both within and outside of the school environment, encouraging achievement and allowing students to take ownership of their success.
“Blended learning means freedom for the students,” said Anthony Townsend, Principal at Locust Grove Middle School. “It allows them to show mastery of the concepts in the way that they need to and provides them with more options to learn in different ways.”
“It was important in our district to stand up and say, it’s not okay to accept the status quo. We need to do more for our kids, we need to expose our kids to more,” said Aaryn Schmuhl, Assistant Superintendent for Learning and Leadership at Henry County. “Through online and blended learning, we are giving them the tools to be successful by their own accord, and it will help them in high school and beyond.”
“Henry County Schools are demonstrating the dynamism of online and blended learning,” said Sari Factor, CEO of Edgenuity. “The district’s success as a result of implementing these new programs is an incredible example of technology’s potential to transform the educational experience.”
