Brookhaven Retreat Observes Post-Traumatic Stress Month During the Month of June
Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) June 03, 2014 -- Throughout the month of June, Brookhaven Retreat will be observing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Month. The goal of PTSD month is to raise awareness on symptoms of this disorder as well as treatments available, to inform everyone that there is hope for those suffering from PTSD.
This anxiety disorder affects approximately 1 in every 10 women, and is a mental health issue Brookhaven Retreat works with every day. Trauma such as sexual assault, abuse, neglect and death of a loved one can leave women with flashbacks, fear and constant stress. PTSD also frequently co-occurs with depression and substance abuse, which can make managing life even more difficult.
Severe symptoms of PTSD disrupt everyday activities and can remain life-long if left untreated. However, there are many treatments that have been shown to effectively benefit PTSD sufferers. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing has been proven to reduce the intensity of trauma’s impact on the brain and memory.
Along with EMDR, Brookhaven Retreat utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, family therapy, experiential therapy and, if necessary, medical intervention, to speed up the recovery process for PTSD sufferers and any co-occurring disorders.
Nearly 7.7 million American adults suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, and like all mental health and substance abuse issues, the effects are far reaching, often damaging relationships with friends and family.
During the month of June, Brookhaven Retreat will continue to raise awareness on the symptoms of PTSD and the importance of seeking help. Since Brookhaven Retreat opened its doors in 2006, it has helped countless women suffering from the after-effects of trauma to repair broken relationships and regain control of their lives.
