CAF Narrows Airbase Search to Three Locations
Midland, TX (PRWEB) December 13, 2013 -- The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) announced today that the Board of Directors has narrowed the search for the National Airbase to three locations, within the state of Texas:
Dallas Executive Airport, Dallas
North Texas Regional Airport, Sherman/Dennison, Texas (Dallas Metropolitan)
Ellington Field Airport, Houston
The search for a new headquarters location began in May of 2013 with more than 25 interested and viable locations. The CAF Board of Directors narrowed the search to six locations in October of this year and in a referendum concluded in November the CAF Members voted, with a 75% approval to give the Board of Directors the authority to select the final location of the CAF National Airbase.
The three airports selected as possible locations are all within a metropolitan community of at least one million people and are easily accessible to tourists and visitors. With the creation of the new CAF National Airbase in one of these locations, the CAF will be able to build a world-class aviation attraction with educational displays, entertaining activities and an annual airshow, all to achieve the CAF’s mission. The CAF’s Mission is: “education such that Americans will value and support the contributions of military aviation in assuring our nation’s freedom.”
In 1957, a small group of ex-service pilots pooled their money to purchase a P-51 Mustang, beginning what is now called the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). With the addition of a pair of F8F Bearcats, the CAF became the founders of the Warbird Movement, an effort to preserve and honor our military history with the rallying cry to “Keep ‘Em Flying!” Now, more than 55 years later, the CAF is the premier Warbird organization, operating 160 vintage aircraft in Honor of American Military Aviation. A non-profit educational association, the CAF has more than 10,000 members and its fleet of historic aircraft is distributed to 73 units located in 28 states for care and operation.
