Colonel Michael Finer Receives Legionnaire Award
(PRWEB) August 23, 2016 -- Recently, Boston’s Sons of Italy held its 28th annual Black Tie Ball at the beautiful ballroom of the Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy. The Sons of Italy has over 6000 members in the Commonwealth. Sons of Italy officers, members, spouses, and friends attended this spectacular gala, with the men in tuxedos and military dress uniforms and the women in evening gowns. The venue was breathtaking, and there was an impressive gourmet food presentation.
As the attendees took their seats in the ballroom, with its large windows overlooking the Boston skyline, the Colors were marched in with drill team precision by the Boston University Army ROTC Color Guard. To receive the Colors was Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran Colonel Michael Finer, from the Massachusetts Army National Guard, in his mess dress uniform. Famous singer Frank Zarba sang the National Anthem. There was dancing to the music of Frank Zarba’s orchestra during the evening.
The highlight of the evening was the award of the annual Sons of Italy coveted Roman Legionnaire Sword. The Legionnaire Sword is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated a unique commitment to public service, selfless leadership, and achievements at the highest levels in the community. Past Governors, Lieutenant Governors, and other high ranking State officials have proudly displayed their Legionnaire Swords in their State House offices. Our Lieutenant Governor, Karyn Polito, received this award last year.
This year’s Legionnaire Award was given to Colonel Michael Finer, a US Army National Guard Officer with nationwide and overseas deployments. As a citizen soldier, Colonel Finer commands the 79th Troop Command of the Massachusetts Army National Guard. His unit, headquartered in Rehoboth, is responsible for pre-planned Homeland Security events such as the Massachusetts National Guard’s task force for the Boston Marathon. During the Boston Marathon bombing incident, Colonel Finer directed operations of the National Guard Joint Staff.
Colonel Finer served overseas in Iraq during “Operation Iraqi Freedom,” as a US Army Garrison Commander. During Hurricane Katrina, Colonel Finer was sent to New Orleans to command a task force Rescue Mission, saving lives. He was awarded the Massachusetts Medal of Merit by Governor Mitt Romney for his leadership during Hurricane Katrina.
