Columbia Car Accident Lawyer Endorses Local and National Efforts in National Impaired Driving Prevention Month
Columbia, SC (PRWEB) December 14, 2014 -- South Carolina car accident lawyer Bert Louthian today said The Louthian Law Firm applauds national and state efforts during National Impaired Driving Prevention Month to reduce the incidence of drunk and drugged driving during the 2014 holiday season.
“The holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day is one of the deadliest and most dangerous times on America's highways, in part because alcohol is included in so many people’s celebrations. South Carolina accident statistics reflect that we have a serious problem in our state,” Louthian said. “In fact, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, South Carolina is near the top of the list for DUI fatalities, with impaired driving being responsible for 41% of all total traffic deaths in 2012. We must make highway safety a priority during this holiday season.”
On November 29, 2014, President Barack Obama issued a Presidential Proclamation designating December as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. The proclamation states, “Deaths caused by impaired driving are preventable and unacceptable, and my Administration is taking action to reduce and eliminate them. We continue to support the law enforcement officers who work to keep us safe and decrease impaired driving.”
“We, too, appreciate the hard work of the police and sheriff’s departments in South Carolina to save lives during this holiday season,” said Louthian, noting the recent announcement by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety that they would be conducting an enforcement blitz for the period between December 12, 2014 and January 1, 2015, as part of their Sober or Slammer! initiative.
“This is a joyful time of the year,” Louthian said, ”and we know people are going to be hosting and attending open houses and parties, dining and dancing. The responsible way to enjoy a few drinks is to have a SANTA – a Sober All Night Totally Awesome Designated Driver – who can get you home safely after a night of revelry.”
Motorists are also encouraged to dial *HP (or *47) if they see someone they suspect of driving while impaired. “Law enforcement can’t be in all places at all times, so it is important that everyone on the road during the holidays keep a watchful eye for those who may be drunk, or even buzzed, while behind the wheel,” Louthian said.
